Overview
Heinrich Harrer is an Austrian adventurer who is determined to find glory despite the costs that may be involved. He decides to climb a treacherous mountain in Tibet that has recently claimed 11 men, hoping that he will succeed and be praised by the government. However, World War II is just getting going, and he and his friend Peter find themselves stranded in the holy city of Lhasa. While Peter gets married to a local tailor, Heinrich begins to spend his time meeting with the Dalai Lama, who is just a child. Heinrich teaches the boy about the modern western world, exposing him to many new ideas. Meanwhile, the boy tells him about the teachings of Buddha. The unlikely friends deeply influence each other's lives.
