Overview
Nine years after the failure of the Discovery One mission to Jupiter, a joint American-Soviet team, including the man who was blamed for the disaster, prepares to travel to the planet to find out what went wrong. Against the back drop of rising global tensions, the astronauts set out to try to answer lingering questions, including what happened to HAL, Discovery's computer. They must also try to determine the origin of a huge black monolith that has appeared in Jupiter's orbit and the fate of Discovery One's sole surviving crew member, David Bowman. After surviving a dangerous landing on Jupiter, the crew begins to uncover the truth about why the original Discovery mission failed while being forced into separate camps by their increasingly war-bound governments.
