Aspiring entertainment executive Benjy Stone has his hands full when he is put in charge of aging matinee screen idol Alan Swann, who is scheduled to make an appearance on the hottest comedy show of the 1950s presented by comedian King Kaiser. Stone looks up to Swann as a larger than life hero he has seen countless times up on the silver screen, but the real life Swann proves to be a womanizing boozer who has a daughter he has neglected to see in years. While babysitting Swann, Stone takes him on a field trip to visit his family in Brooklyn before the big show night and in the process, helps Swann realize that he can be just as heroic in real life as the characters he portrays in the cinema.
