The California Atoms are a professional football team that is headed nowhere. With an inept squad and an owner, Hank Cooper, in debt to some mobsters, they need help. To produce at least a half-time show that's high caliber, they bring in Yugoslavian boy Andy Petrovic and his mule Gus, who can kick 100-yard field goals. Before long Gus is not just entertaining at half-time; he's leading the Atoms to victories. In order to escape his gambling debts and the mobsters, Cooper needs to win the championship. The mobsters kidnap Gus before the final game to keep the Atoms from winning, but Gus escapes their capture, makes his way back to the big game via helicopter and leads the Atoms the league title, making a hero of Andy in the process. |
