Overview
A 10-year-old Mexican girl, Estrella, lives in a world filled with violence caused by the Mexican Drug War. During a classroom writing assignment, she writes about a prince who wanted to become a tiger because tigers know no fear. When gunfire from outside sends everyone dropping to the floor, Estrella's teacher places three pieces of chalk into her hands and tells her that the pieces are wishes like in fairy tales. Later, school is suspended indefinitely. At home, Estrella discovers that her mother is missing. She makes a wish on a piece of chalk to see her mother again. Surprisingly, her mother returns... as a ghost. Estrella flees and crosses paths with a group of orphaned boys, Shinen, Pop, Tucsi and Morro, who have formed their own gang. As the children confront adults intent on destroying them, Estrella realizes that these princes must use cunning and her remaining wishes to save themselves.
