Overview
Based on historical events, two friends in Medieval France are pitted against each other in a duel to the death to settle a judicial order. This would be the last time in history that such a duel was held by lawful decree in France. The dispute arises when the Norman knight Jean de Carrouges brings his squire, Jacques Le Gris, to trial for the rape of his wife Marguerite. Le Gris is held in high regard by the nobles of the French court, so Marguerite seeks justice through the intervention of King Charles VI. According to tradition, the winner of a trial by combat would be fated by the will of God.
