Trailer | Overview Set in rural Mississippi, this film adaptation deals with issues of deep-seeded racism and justice. Carl Lee Hailey, an African American, takes matters into his own hands when he suspects that the two white men accused of raping and attempting to murder his 10-year-old-daughter will be acquitted. Hailey opens fire at the courthouse, killing both men and seriously injuring a nearby deputy. White lawyer Jake Brigance agrees to defend Hailey. He intends to plead not guilty by reason of insanity but does not count on the firestorm that erupts when the case gains national media attention. As the trial unfolds, all the players are affected by generations-old hatreds and beliefs, while the jury must determine if Hailey was justified in his actions. |
