The government is doing everything it can to take control of all facets of private industry for “the good of the people.” Meanwhile, with unemployment over 24 percent and severe oil shortages, the economy is collapsing, and the prominent entrepreneurs and innovators of business are disappearing. Dagny Taggart, VP of operations for Taggart Transcontinental, is trying to keep the railroad running and profitable in spite of resistance from her brother, James Taggart and CEO. Hank Rearden is approached by government officials who insist that he must sell his advance Rearden Metal to them under the new “Fair Share” program which requires a business to sell to any buyer. He refuses, and the government brings charges against him. To make matters worse, the government enacts a new regulation which freezes production and employment and mandates that all patents be transferred to government ownership |
