A lonely middle-aged man, Albert Nobbs, works as a hotel waiter in Dublin in the 19th century. Albert wants to own a tobacco shop one day and saves most of his earnings for the future. One day, the hotel's owner Mrs. Baker asks Albert to share his room with a contractor hired to paint the hotel. Albert is horrified and the painter, Hubert Page, soon learns why: Albert is a woman who, after being raped as a girl, decided to live as a man to protect herself. Hubert doesn't reveal Albert's secret. He is also a woman in hiding. Unlike Albert though, Hubert hasn't been alone her whole life. She's married and decides to show Albert how he can have the same freedom and support.
