Shirley, a working-class housewife, is fed up with her husband Joe and her life, and when her best friend Jane wins a trip to Greece, Shirley accepts her invitation. When Jane vanishes for several days with a man she met on the plane, Shirley starts an affair with a handsome taverna owner. When it's time to go home, she balks at leaving not because she is in love with the taverna owner but because she feels she has discovered a part of herself she lost after years of marriage and motherhood. Jane returns home without her leaving Shirley's suitcase with a shocked Joe, and Shirley gets a job at the taverna. Finally, Joe follows Shirley to Greece where he sees her in a new light. |
