This is a historical comedy-drama portraying the last days of the world-famous Russian novelist Tolstoy. In an effort to defy the importance of material possessions, Tolstoy launches an anti-materialistic movement, while he personally struggles to find balance between fame and wealth and his professed beliefs. Paparazzi prowl outside of Tolstoy's home, attempting to photograph discontent between Tolstoy and his aristocratic wife, Sofya. Tolstoy's aide, Chertkov, has nothing but contempt for Sofya, and he schemes to change Tolstoy's will in order to stop Sofya from inheriting royalties from Tolstoy's writings. Entering into this mix is Valentin, a young charming idealist, who admires Tolstoy and promotes his principles. Running parallel is the story of Valentin and his lover, Masha, whose relationship bears similarities to Tolstoy and Sofya's.
