In 1955, Jane Holman is waiting for her husband to come home. He's been missing in the Korean War for some time. Jane, along with her two sons, are driving when they run across a transient named Jack McCloud. His leg is broken. Jane unexpectedly invites him and his dog, Betty Jane, into her home where she can care for him until his leg is healed. The sons, Tom and Gunny, have different reactions to Jack. Jack teaches Tom baseball. The boy misses his father and soon bonds with Jack. Gunny believes there's more to Jack and Betty Jane that the man isn't telling them. Jack finds that he is growing to care deeply for this family. |
