A young boy named Josh Waitzkin discovers that he has a rare talent. He is very good at chess. Seeking to help their son nurture his gift, his parents hire Bruce Pandolfini, an excellent teacher. Pandolfini is determined to mold the boy into the kind of player he wants him to be, namely the kind of aggressive chess player that the champion Bobby Fischer once was. At the same time that Josh is learning from Pandolfini, he continues to learn from a chess player he met in the park. This man plays very differently from the legendary Fischer. Josh must learn to negotiate his way through the various styles he’s learning and come to his own creative synthesis of how to play the game.
