Claudia Draper is a call girl who stands accused of murdering one of her clients. Her high-class parents are deeply embarrassed by the situation, and they hope to reduce the scandal by having her declared mentally incompetent and thus unable to stand trial. Claudia, however, is deeply combative and insists on being allowed to go through the trial. Her relationship with her mother and stepfather is complex and strained, and as the proceedings unfold, more and more of her history is unearthed. The statements that come out help to reveal why she finds it so difficult to trust anyone and why she is so hostile to the people who raised her. Still, her behavior does little to indicate that she is truly of sound mind.
