Overview
In the Bronx, 1942, Eddie Kurnitz becomes a traveling salesman to pay off medical bills incurred by his late wife during her prolonged illness. He sends his two sons, Jay and Arty, to live in Yonkers with their grandmother, simply called Grandma. The boys fear Grandma's stern manner and sharp tongue; they pity their autistic Aunt Bella, also living with Grandma. Their estranged older brother, Louie, also moves into Grandma's house. Aunt Bella enjoys a courtship with a coworker she longs to marry and open a restaurant with. Jay and Arty are determined to make money fast so they can help their father and reunite with him shortly. Jay and Arty plot to steal Grandma's $15,000 stash, presumed hidden somewhere in her house.
