Overview
The dramatic history of a fine Italian violin constructed in 1681 is revealed as its ownership changes over three centuries. The craftsman mixes blood of his deceased wife into the varnish. The violin is donated to an order of monks and used for music education in their orphanage for over 100 years. After being stolen, it is possessed and played by Gypsies for another century. After being traded to a wealthy Englishman, a servant of Chinese descent transports it to Shanghai, where it spends decades in a shop. After the Cultural Revolution, it is shipped to Canada for auction. The story of the violin closely mirrors the prophecy of a tarot card reading performed for the wife of the original craftsman before her death.
