It’s the 1920s. A man named Leonard Zelig has a desperate need to be liked. He so wants to fit into the world around him that he develops a remarkable talent for doing so. He has the uncanny ability to become a “chameleon,” to take on the looks and sounds of the people around him. He is particularly drawn to famous people, and so he comes to the attention of Dr. Eudora Fletcher, a psychiatrist who finds his disorder rather fascinating. She works to cure him but it backfires when Zelig develops a strongly intolerant personality. She falls in love with him anyway and follows him to Germany before they move together to America where they settle into fame.
