Overview
A simple-minded man named Chance has spent a sheltered life tending the gardens of his employer’s estate. Everything he knows about the world, he’s learned from television. When his employer dies, he finds himself loose in the world for the first time. When he is struck by the car of a wealthy businessman named Rand, he’s taken in by the Rand family. They mishear his name as Chauncey Gardiner. Since he is wearing his late employers’ clothes, they assume he is wealthy. When he speaks in his simple way about gardens, they think he is spouting pithy allegorical wisdom. His influence begins to spread, though none of it really touches him, since he is busy just being who he’s always been.
