Overview
Rom com meets racial tension on China’s Yangtze River when Machinist’s Mate First Class Jake Holman joins the crew on the gunship USS San Pablo, nicknamed the “Sand Pebble.” The sailors refer to themselves affectionately as “sand pebbles.” Jake has a poor track record of playing well with the other sailors so it should come as no surprise when he falls afoul of the ship's politically incorrect system of dividing the labor. He does manage to form a friendship with fellow shipmate, Frenchy Burgoyne. In addition to dealing with a crabby, demanding captain, Holman handles the fallout of an ill-fated romance between Frenchy and a local slave girl, Molly, while becoming involved with missionary school teacher, Shirley Eckert.
