John Patterson, an engineer in the British Army, is in charge of a camp of workers building a railway bridge over the Tsavo River in Africa. All goes well until one of the workers is killed by a lion. Patterson eases the workers fears by shooting the lion in a nighttime hunt, but soon after more men begin disappearing from the camp. Locals blame a pair of killer lions who they call "The Ghost" and "The Darkenss." They seem to have a supernatural ability to evade Patterson's attempts to kill them. The rail company brings in an American Charles Remington, but soon the workers have fled the camp in fear, leaving Patteron, Remington and Patterson's assistant to face the lions alone.
