Richard and Emmeline are cousins who have are involved in a shipwreck in the South Pacific as young children. Initially washed ashore with an adult companion, they soon find themselves alone after he drowns, and they must find a way to survive on their own without him. The island is an idyllic paradise, so once their fear dissipates, they make their way rather well, and as teenagers, they are living happily together. However, their lives become more complicated when the two of them discover that they are sexual creatures. They become physically involved with each other, and Emmeline becomes pregnant, a condition that neither of them understands. Additionally, there is always the possibility that outsiders could encroach on their world, disrupting their tiny utopian bubble. |
