When alcoholic former minor-leaguer Morris Buttermaker gets the nod to a coach a boys baseball team made up of the worst athletes in the league, he’s got his work cut out for him. After a 26-0 opening loss, Buttermaker goes on the recruiting trail. He picks up a girl with a wicked fastball, Amanda Whurlizer, and a Harley-riding, trouble-making boy who is easily the best player in the league, Kelly Leak. With the new recruits, the Bears improve and make it to the championship game, where they meet the dreaded Yankees and their arrogant, ultra-competitive coach, Roy Tanner. Buttermaker and Tanner trade insults and barbs throughout the game before Buttermaker realizes that he’s turning into a person he doesn't like. He puts all his benchwarmers into the game, and the Bears lose but have fun trying.
