Overview
"Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" focuses on a particularly spirited horse who undergoes a series of intense adventures in the American West of the 1800s. The realistic portrayal of the horses sets it apart from most animated stories in which horses are major characters. Though his thoughts are heard in voice overs, Spirit never speaks; he merely communicates through realistic gestures. Starting out as a wild stallion leading his herd across the plains, Spirit is separated from his family when his curiosity gets the better of him and he wanders too close to an army camp. After a cruel colonel attempts to break his spirit, a young Lakota man takes him to his village and trains him with kindness, but Spirit still longs for freedom.
