Claireece Jones, who people call by her middle name Precious, is a 16-year-old girl living a very troubled life. She is black, overweight and illiterate. Her father beats her and rapes her. She is pregnant with his child. She already has one baby, a girl with Down’s syndrome who lives with Precious’ grandmother. Precious lives with her mother, who constantly rains verbal and physical abuse on her. She constantly abuses Precious for wasting her time going to school, saying that she would be better off collecting welfare. Because of her pregnancy, Precious is transferred to an alternative high school. She begins to have hope there as she meets Miss Blu Rain, a teacher who inspires Precious to reach for a better life through education. |
