The teenagers of Peyton Place have grown up under the thumbs of adults with strict moral codes, and they expect their children to adhere to their ideas of proper behavior and Christian ideals. However, the young men and women on the verge of adulthood come to realize that there is a lot of hypocrisy among the adults, and they wonder if they can really trust that their parents know what is best for them. Several scandals and tragedies rock the bucolic New England town as World War II encroaches upon its residents. One young couple is accused of an intimate encounter that did not take place; another is raped by her stepfather and kills him in self-defense. Dark secrets threaten to tear the town apart. |
