Overview
Mrs. Flax, a single mom with a history of irresponsible behavior and very bad taste in men, relocates with her two daughters to a small town in Massachusetts in 1963. They move into a house that is located near an abbey, which the teenaged Charlotte loves because she is obsessed with Catholicism. Meanwhile, the younger daughter, an adorable child named Kate, quickly finds a place for herself on the swim team at school. Charlotte is a morose but sweet-spirited girl navigating many of the typical trials of the teen years. She finds herself falling in love with the young man who rings the bells in the tower at the abbey while disapproving of her mother's romance to pudgy and balding but kind divorcee Lou.
