Overview
Nine-year-old Chiyo lives in a small fishing village in Japan during the 1920s. Her life is turned upside down after her family sells her to a geisha house. There, Chiyo suffers abusive treatment from the people who run the geisha house. Chiyo's beauty, however, does not go unnoticed for long, and soon she attracts the attention and jealousy of the house's best geisha Hatsumomo. Chiyo is soon saved by Hatsumono's rival, Mameha, who protects Chiyo and shows her how to be a skilled geisha. Chiyo becomes known as the geisha Sayuri, a renowned geisha serving only the most privileged men. The start of World War II, however, threatens to change Sayuri's whole world.
