Anthony Swofford is a college dropout who joined the military to find his place in the world. Not immediately an ideal soldier, Anthony is called out by his commanding officer for pretending to be sick and other transgressions. He is then invited to undergo sniper training, as he is told he has an aptitude for that particular skill. He successfully completes training and is sent to the Middle East to await further instructions. While there, he and his buddies get into some trouble and are integral to an attack on Saddam Hussein's regiment. Upon returning home from the war, Anthony finds out his girlfriend has moved on with another man. An unspecified time later, he finds out one of his war buddies has died. He attends the funeral and commiserates about the war with his surviving comrades. |
