Dr. Ethan Powell is a distinguished anthropologist who has been missing for two years in the African jungle, where he was studying gorillas. When he is found, Powell kills three men and injures two others, and he is put in prison. To the bewilderment of his rescuers, he has not spoken a word. Dr. Theo Calder is a psychiatrist who is put on Powell's case in an attempt to get him to speak and to hopefully learn how he became the person he now is. Although he begins his sessions with the hopes of becoming a renowned psychiatrist and possibly a best-selling author, Calder becomes engrossed in the task of breaking his patient's silence in order to find out how a man becomes an animal.
