Overview
The Gilded Age is an American historical television drama series that follows the lives of the wealthy Steins of New York City, beginning in the 1870s. The series follows different characters through their lives as they live in an era of intense wealth, constant advancement and decision-making, and conflict between decadence and morality. Viewers are introduced to the exclusive world of New York's upper class, including Manhattan's rich, powerful and influential. The show is set in the postbellum era of New York City during the height of reconstruction after the Civil War. The series follows a family with a complicated history as they attempt to regain their spotlight. The series begins its story in 1877, three years after they lost everything in trying to corner the market on opium and making it public. They lost all their money, property, and holdings. The family patriarch has spent the past three years living in exile in France and is just now returning to New York.
