Overview
Jane Fairchild, a foundling, has carved out a life as a housemaid in the home of Mr Godfrey and Mrs Clarrie Niven. The work isn't backbreaking. The Nivens are respectable. Jane has plenty of time to pursue her interests. Jane also has a lover, aristocrat Paul Sheringham, who is a neighbor to the Nivens. They have been together for years, but Paul is the last of his family and expected to marry someone of his station. On Mother's Day in 1924, while the Nivens aren't at home, Jane secretly meets with Paul a few days before his arranged wedding. What happens that day has an considerable impact on her for many years.
