An adaptation of the award-winning play, the movie explores the lives of black women. Each woman in the film portrays a character that is represented in a collection of 20 poems. In every poem, a different issue that impacts women in general and women of color is discussed. The women's lives are interconnected as they share their experiences with issues including rape, abortion, abandonment, love, and infidelity. The nine women recite poems that convey their innermost thoughts to the audience.
