Overview
Before the beginning of World War II, a German soldier, Captain Stefan Brandt, is assigned the task of finding a spy in the household of Kaiser Wilhelm II who is living in the Netherlands. During the investigation, Brandt crosses paths with a maid, Mieke de Jong, and falls madly in love with her even though she reveals that she is a Jew. As the search for the spy ramps up and tension in the household increases, Brandt tries desperately to come to terms with a conflict in his heart between his loyalty to the state and his love of Mieke.
