Overview
Named after the 13th Amendment of the Constitution, 13th focuses on the roll of racism in the American penal system. This amendment effectively ended slavery with the exception of punishment for a crime. However, in an age of privatized prisons and mass criminalization, the 13th amendment may need an amendment of its own. Director Ava DuVernay uses interviews from activists, historians, and ex-convicts to make her argument that slavery is alive and well in the countries prisons.
