Overview
Twenty years after most of humanity was infected and wiped out by an infection spread through airborne fungal spores, what remains of modern civilization lives in tightly controlled quarantine zones. Almost no one is allowed in or out, and anyone exposed to the infection is executed on the spot. Exposure means certain death, involving slowly turning into a zombie-like creature with no known cure. Joel, a smuggler who survived the original outbreak, is hired to transport a child named Ellie across the United States. Ellie was exposed to the infection but is somehow immune, and a group called the Fireflies is still trying to find a cure in what remains of California.
