A major famine hit China hard in 1942 in a tumultuous time when the world was torn by war. In the depths of winter, one particular village is pulling through the difficult times thanks to Fan, a generous landlord. He manages to feed the people of the village and keep his family in comfort due to his great wealth. However, trouble arrives at Fan's doorstep in the form of bandits. They pillage the village and set it on fire. Not only does Fan lose his home, his son dies as well. One tragedy after another hits Fan and the people of China until he finds a young, orphaned girl and takes her in at the end, giving him a reason to want to survive. |
