Overview
The War of the Buttons is a sweet, beautifully photographed film set in rural WWII France. It begins with the rivalry between the youths of two neighboring villages, and evolves into a coming of age film when one of the young men falls for the new neighbor, a young Jewish girl. When it becomes apparent that her life is in danger from the Nazi purge, the boys of the two villages squash their own conflict in order to protect her. It is a naively told tale of what happens when children are forced to confront the realities of the adult world too soon, however it holds within it a good message for young adults about the concepts of loyalty and doing the right thing.
