Overview
In 1800s China, Lily and Snow Flower are bound together in a secret ceremony of sisterhood. The two girls are married off to men of very different stations and move to separate towns. Lily marries into a wealthy and prestigious family, while upper-class Snow Flower becomes poor. The friends keep in contact, communicating with a secret written language. Years later in modern Shanghai, Snow Flower's descendent Sophia discovers her story and decides to write a book based on Snow Flower's life.
