Overview
Manech and four of his friends are convicted of mutilating themselves to avoid conscription in the first World War and are sent to the front lines as punishment. Manech's fiance, Mathilde, searches for him by collecting clues and never giving up hope of finding her beloved. As she searches, she uncovers the unsavory way the French government deals with military deserters and meets other men who were sent to the no-man's land at the front as punishment. She hires a private detective to assist her in her search for Manech. The pair is eventually reunited after several near-misses in their separate travels.
