In 1930s Germany, Jewish lawyer Walter Redlich sees the writing on the wall and moves his family to the British colony of Kenya to escape Nazi oppression. His wife Jettel is unhappy, but their young daughter Regina immediately acclimates herself to her new home. The family finds that their troubles are not over when Britain declares war on Germany and they are considered citizens of an enemy state. Forced to live in an internment camp, the Redlichs slowly begin to fall apart.
