Growing up poor in Chile in the 1920s, Esteban Trueba wants to marry Rosa Del Valle, a rich man’s daughter. Esteban vows to go away and earn enough money to support a family. Unfortunately, Rosa dies from a poison intended to kill her father. Distraught at his loss, Esteban spends the next twenty years building a successful hacienda, Tres Marias, by exploiting the poor, local people. He is both respected and feared by everyone. After his mother dies, Esteban decides to marry Rosa’s younger sister, Clara. They have a daughter named Blanca, who grows up on the hacienda and falls in love with Pedro, a fiery, revolutionary boy. Esteban is outraged and does everything he can to keep them apart. Clara tries to prevent Esteban from becoming violent and moves out of their house. Esteban is now isolated from his family. |
