Col. Charles "Chappy" Sinclair is back and out of retirement to head the top-secret military operation labeled "Dark Star." The mission requires American and Russian pilots to join forces to destroy a nuclear weapons compound in a Middle Eastern country. Tensions rise between the rival pilots who struggle to form a cohesive group within the two-week time frame. A secret government conspiracy to see the mission fail adds further difficulties to a seemingly hopeless task.
