It’s the time of the Great Depression. Every week, Cecilia goes to the movies to get away from her sad and depressed life. She works as a waitress and goes home to her abusive husband nightly. Movies are her escape. She becomes entranced with an RKO picture called The Purple Rose of Cairo and watches it several times. She’s astonished when the lead character comes down off the screen. They spend time together in her town and also within the movie, going back and forth. Eventually the producer of the movies hears what havoc his character’s defection caused and arrives to talk him into going back on screen. To do this, he must convince Cecilia to fall in love with him instead. |
