Overview
Penniless but ambitious orphan Becky Sharp visits her wealthy friend Amelia before taking a job as a governess. She attracts the attention of Amelia's brother Jos, but he is persuaded not to marry her. Later, Becky impresses her new employer Pitt Crawley, but when he asks her to marry him, she reveals that she has already wed his dashing son, Captain Rawdon Crawley. Pitt disowns his son. Several years later, impoverished, they reconcile with Rawdon's family, but he is too deeply in debt and is thrown in debtor's prison. When he is released, he believes Becky gave herself to another man to secure his freedom, and he leaves her, later dying of tropical fever. Old flame Jos returns and marries Becky, taking her to India.
