Trailer | Overview Herman Raucher recalls the summer of 1942 when he was a 15 year-old. Walking on the beach of Nantucket one day, he and his buddies are awe struck by the beauty of a young bride as her soldier husband picks her up in his arms. Hermie, the teenage version of Herman Raucher begins to daydream about Dorothy, the soldier's wife. The boys spend the summer trying to have sex with some girls they meet. One day Hermie sees the soldier depart by water taxi. Later, Hermie finds the opportunity to help Dorothy carry groceries. He returns to help her with chores and they begin a friendship. One day he enters a quiet house to find an empty bottle of whiskey and a letter from the government informing Dorothy of her husband's death. The inebriated Dorthy puts on music, dances with Hermie, and then makes love to him. Dorothy leaves the island. The next time Hermie goes to Dorthy's house he finds a note on the door explaining that she hoped he understood what had happened. |
