Overview
Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy and the rest of the Enterprise crew are living in exile on the planet Vulcan when a strange object enters Federation space. It settles over the Earth and causes worldwide power outages and storms. Using a captured Klingon bird of prey, Kirk and his crew race back to Earth. They learn the signal from the object is similar to the sounds produced by humpback whales, which are extinct in the 23rd Century. The crew travel back in time to 1986, where they discover a pair of whales at an aquarium in San Francisco. Kirk and the others must recharge their ship's engine and try to bring the whales to the 23rd Century to save Earth.
