Overview
Riding into Wyoming soon after the passage of the Homestead Act, Shane, a man with a past he obviously wants to keep secret, hires on as a farmhand for homesteader Joe Starrett. Starrett's young son is fascinated by Shane and his guns, begging to be taught how to shoot, even over his mother's strident objections. Despite an obvious attraction to Starrett's wife, Shane stays on and finds himself drawn into an increasingly violent conflict between Starrett and cattle baron Rufus Ryker, who is trying to drive all the homesteaders off the land. When he learns that Starrett is planning to confront Ryker and his men, Shane pistol-whips him to prevent him from going. Knowing that the conflict must end, Shane rides into town for a final showdown to release the town and its people from the grips of the evil rancher.
