A man named Henri Charierre, also nicknamed Papillon, is a petty criminal who is wrongfully convicted of murder. He's sentenced to a penal colony in the French Guyana. During the voyage he meets a forger named Louis Degas, who quickly becomes his best friend. The two of them experience horrific conditions in the penal colony and struggle to find a way to escape. When Papillon tries to escape the first time, he fails miserably and is forced to spend two years trapped in solitary confinement. On his second attempt, he manages to get out and spends a period of time with a group of Central American Indians. When he's eventually caught, he's forced to spend five years in solitary confinement, and once released he decides to make one more bid for freedom.
