Overview
Blacksmith Balian lives in feudal Europe in a town where his malcontent half-brother is a local priest. He has recently suffered the suicide of his wife, a sin for which the half-brother refuses his sister-in-law a burial on hallowed ground. This results in Balian taking his brother’s life and fleeing to Jerusalem with his noble father that has returned to name him his heir. He makes the trek across land and sea to Ibelin, a castle and surrounding town in the holy city. There he searches for atonement and takes up the struggle for justice. He eventually leads the last, failed defense against local Muslims after other nobles in the area commit atrocities against the family and people of Saladin.
