When President Plutarco Elias Calles of Mexico begins an all-out war against the country's revered Catholic institutions, a group of resistance fighters known as the Cristeros take up arms on behalf of the church. A kindly old priest, Father Christopher, falls to the federal troops, an event that inspires young Jose to join the Cristeros. Just thirteen years old, Jose finds a protector in General Gorostieta, a retired military man. The boy falls victim to a kidnapping and is then tortured and executed for his faith. In a quest for vengeance, the general leads his ragtag army against the Federales, but then dies in battle, for which he and a dozen other martyrs would be honored by the Pope Benedict XVI in 2005.
